QUOTE

Constantino Aucca

President of ECOAN & Executive Director of Accion Andina

“All the great work to restore our lost forests is possible by practicing three Incan principles: The Ayni, the Minka and the Mita – a deep sense of working together. Today I help you and tomorrow you help me. And not just person to person or community to community, it is among the entire people. These ancestral practices apply to all of us, not just those of us of Incan descent. We are convinced that only through large-scale reforestation campaigns, working closely together for the common good, can we fight the effects of Climate Change.”

CAMPAIGNS

ACCION ANDINA HAS BEEN RECOGNIZED AS A UN NATURE-BASED-SOLUTION CONTRIBUTION TO REVERSE CLIMATE CHANGE.

Accion Andina works with and contributes to some of the most important campaigns in the region and globally to attract commitment, support, and resources for the restoration of Andean forests.

Urgency

CLIMATE CHANGE IS MELTING ANDEAN GLACIERS, ENDANGERING NATURE AND PEOPLE

Indigenous people living in remote villages beneath Andean glaciers are on the front line of climate change as they watch the ice rapidly recede. Dependent upon glacial melt for drinking water and irrigation, their communities are urgently restoring, at ever greater scale, native Polylpeis forests, which have a tremendous capacity to absorb and retain meltwater in their watersheds, sustaining people and wildlife as well as the headwaters of the Amazon.

50%

OF ANDES' GLACIERS HAVE MELTED DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING

Existing and new growth forests are nature’s enormous carbon reservoirs as carbon removed from the atmosphere is stored in every part of the trees as well as their soil. Our restored and protected native Polylepis forest ecosystems also prevent erosion, creating healthy soils and wetlands.

35

THREATHENED SPECIES

Among the many endangered species are the iconic Andean condor, Spectacled Bear, and Puma. Restored, protected Polylepis mountain forests not only offer refuge for threatened Andean wildlife, but also those able to survive climate change by successfully migrating to higher ground.

LIVELIHOODS

Polylepis forests prevent soil erosion and flooding and provide water security, enabling indigenous communities of the high Andes to continue sustainable farming on their ancestral lands and to maintain their cultures. Their work as forest stewards, growing saplings, planting trees, and protecting forests provides much-needed income.

Goal

PROTECT, RESTORE + MANAGE 1MILLION HECTARES/ 2.5 MILLION ACRES OF HIGH ANDEAN FOREST ECOSYSTEMS

Accion Andina responds to two needs: to protect remaining high Andean forests presently reduced to just 5% of their historical range and to steadily restore these lost forests.

Accion Andina partners and communities engage in long-term projects to plant the right trees in the right places.

Over the next 25 years, we will preserve the remaining 500,000 hectares (2.4 million acres) of native Polylepis forest while restoring and protecting an additional 500,000 hectares.

Polylepis

RESTORED POLYLEPIS FOREST ECOSYSTEMS: NATURE-BASED SOLUTION TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Growing at altitudes up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet), just beneath Andean glaciers, the hardy Polylepis is the world’s highest altitude forest. No other habitat is proportionally more important for all that it influences below, ensuring that freshwater, including glacial melt, is captured in its watersheds and reaches not only nearby mountain villages, but also the millions of people in lowland towns and cities who depend upon it, including for agriculture. It supports a unique, globally rare, and rapidly disappearing ecosystem, vital to the biodiversity and peoples of the Andes.

Water security

Healthy Polylepis forests’ watersheds enable Indigenous communities to continue sustainable farming on their ancestral lands and maintain their cultures. population living in or near the Andes (approx. 50 million people)

Carbon Storage

Climate resilience requires access to fresh water. The freshwater stored by Polylepis forests feeds into watersheds at the headwaters of the Amazon. ensuring that freshwater, including glacial melt, is captured in its watersheds and reaches not only nearby mountain villages, but also the millions of people in lowland towns and cities who depend upon it.

Stabilize soil

The capacity of Polylepis to absorb enormous quantities of mist from clouds, even in the dry season, transforms degraded, eroded landscapes into healthy soil, streams, and wetlands.

Create Microhabitat

Andean forest ecosystems enable endemic wildlife including over 20 IUCN-listed, threatened species like the Spectacled Bear, puma and Andean condor to thrive. These mountain forests will increasingly be a refuge for the endangered bird, mammal, plant, reptile, and amphibian species able to migrate to higher ground to survive climate change.
